Hiking Stoney Middleton Heritage Trail (Purple Walk)

A compact heritage loopThis 2.

This 2.55-mile loop starts at The Cupola Visitor Centre and links Stoney Middleton’s lanes, cliff paths and Middleton Dale. Allow about 1.5 hours, including time to read the heritage boards and pause at viewpoints. The Purple Walk is the village-focused option; the Green Walk continues through Eyam, so do not follow a combined map by mistake.

What you walkFrom The Cupola, the route threads through the village before climbing onto mapped footpaths…

From The Cupola, the route threads through the village before climbing onto mapped footpaths and a public bridleway around the limestone edge. It returns via Middleton Lane and village streets. Expect a moderate walk with a steep section, uneven ground and a few shared-road stretches. In damp weather, its hard-surface sections are generally more forgiving than the Green Walk’s natural paths.

Stories in the stoneLook for old cottages, listed buildings, caves, quarry scars and views across Middleton Dale.

Look for old cottages, listed buildings, caves, quarry scars and views across Middleton Dale. Stoney Middleton’s story reaches from Domesday to lead mining, limestone quarrying and rock climbing. At Lovers Leap, local folklore gives the cliff a dramatic human story; the walk’s appeal comes from seeing those stories in one compact circuit.

Plan the dayUse the large lay-by on the A632 near Lovers Leap or the playing-field entrance on the Calver…

Use the large lay-by on the A632 near Lovers Leap or the playing-field entrance on the Calver side, then walk to The Cupola. The Cupola has toilets, food and the trail map and information pack. Take care beside the A623 and near cliff or quarry edges. On the high path, frame the village and dale rather than only the rock face; that best shows what makes this route distinctive.
