The route mixes woodland, moor and streamside walking.

From the tea-room, follow the path by the ha-ha to the pond, then descend through Granby Wood to Granby Barn. Cross the road and Burbage Brook, then climb Hollowgate, an old packhorse route used for salt, lead and charcoal. At the top, turn toward Owler Tor and cross Lawrence Field. A short right-hand detour reaches Surprise View over Hope Valley; it’s the route’s broadest view. The descent follows the fence above Bolehill Quarry, whose gritstone helped build the Derwent and Howden dams. Look for the old quarry fireplace and medieval field boundaries.

Padley Gorge changes the footing: its main path is built from gritstone blocks and runs past boulders, Burbage Brook and gnarled oaks. A small bridge and climb lead back to the gate below Granby Barn; cross the road and retrace the pond path to finish. There are steep sections, and footing varies after rain and in colder months. Dogs are welcome on leads. Longshaw Café and toilets are beside the visitor centre.
