Overview

About Padley Gorge

Why stop

  • Tumbling brook through mossy ancient woodland
  • Easy link to Longshaw walks

Heads up

  • Rocky, uneven footing and steep sections
  • Parking gets busy at popular times
A deep, narrow, wooded gorge with Burbage Brook running through it. The surrounding ancient sessile oak and birch woodland is wildlife-rich and feels like a different world from the open gritstone moorland just above it.

Getting there and access

The gorge sits between Grindleford and the A6187, close to Longshaw. You can approach from Grindleford and Upper Padley at the lower end, from Surprise View, or from Longshaw, where there is a flatter waymarked route. Facilities are at Longshaw, not in the gorge: cafe and food, accessible toilets, parking and picnic space. There are no visitor facilities recorded within the gorge itself, so plan around Longshaw for refreshments, toilets, parking and picnic space.

The brook moves between moss-covered rocks as gently flowing stream and tumbling small waterfalls, with twisted oaks and birches leaning over the water. It is a favourite for slow wandering, picnics, paddling in the shallows and photography: the canopy keeps much of the gorge shaded, so the light is filtered and the water and mossy stone are the main subjects. Paths run along the gorge and the brook, so a short visit links easily into a longer loop.

Longshaw is the open, gentler side of the experience: meadow, pond, wide drives and easy strolling. The gorge is tighter, steeper, damper and rockier. A circular of about 2.3 miles ties the two together, taking in the Longshaw meadow and pond, Burbage Brook and the gorge. It is short overall and on good paths and drives, but includes several gates and a short section of steep steps.

Footing is uneven, hilly and rocky in places, with tree roots, wet stone, steps and stiles, and steep sections near drops, so sturdy shoes matter and families should keep children close on the rocks beside the brook. Signage is not always obvious once you are among the trees, so a map or a planned loop helps. It is a well-loved spot and parking gets busy at popular times, so an early start makes the visit easier.

Good to knowCome early in the day for quieter paths.

Come early in the day for quieter paths. Allow more time than the distance suggests, since the rocky ground and the pull of the waterfalls slow most people down.
