Overview

About Longshaw Estate

Why stop

  • Many routes combine woods, moorland and gritstone scenery
  • Good wildlife and photography opportunities across varied landscapes

Heads up

  • Popular at weekends and holidays
  • Many longer routes are uneven, muddy or steep
This is a whole working countryside estate, not a single viewpoint. Around 1,600 acres of ancient woodland, parkland, heather moorland, gritstone edges and old quarries sit together, so you can string together a short amble or a half-day walk from the same starting point. Longshaw Lodge and the welcome building anchor the visitor side, with a café, toilets, a second-hand bookshop and a local map to help you choose a route.

Best time to go

The estate and car parks follow a dawn to dusk pattern, while the café, toilets, welcome building and bookshop keep shorter daytime hours. Early morning gives the best light, quietest paths and easiest parking; autumn brings strong colour in the woods, and late summer brings moorland purple. Weekends and holidays get busy, and parking is charged for non-members. Blue Badge parking is available in the main Woodcroft car park, with accessible toilets near the café, but many paths beyond that are rough.

  • Padley Gorge and Burbage Brook, where the stream tumbles through mossy oak woodland over small falls.
  • Owler Tor for weathered rock formations, and Curbar Gap and the neighbouring Eastern Moors for wide Derwent Valley views.
  • White Edge Moor for open heather and long horizons.
  • Bole Hill Quarry and Froggatt Wood, where millstone quarrying, packhorse routes and a former railway line left visible traces.
  • Longshaw Meadow and the restored pond, good for a quiet pause and for dragonflies and damselflies on warm days.
  • Families can use the orienteering course or wildlife trail around the grounds.
Routes and footwearWaymarked routes start near the lodge and café, including gentler loops of roughly 4.

Waymarked routes start near the lodge and café, including gentler loops of roughly 4.5 to 5 km, one of which avoids steps and stiles. Longer options, such as an 8.4 km circuit of around 3.5 hours from a car park on the estate's edge, are challenging, with steep sections, steps and uneven or muddy ground, and are not suitable for wheelchairs. Treat route choice as a menu rather than one fixed itinerary. Boots with grip are sensible year-round, since woodland paths and moorland tracks hold water long after rain.

Red deer are sometimes seen in the meadows in summer, often near dawn and dusk, including the meadow opposite the main Woodcroft entrance. Bats are active on summer evenings, badgers use the woods behind the café, pied flycatchers and redstarts are associated with the gorge woodland, and green woodpeckers turn up in glades. Nothing is guaranteed. The protected northern hairy wood ant builds nests along woodland edges, so stay on paths. Dogs are welcome outdoors on short leads to protect wildlife and grazing stock.
