Hiking Jane Eyre Hathersage Trail

A literary walk with a proper climbJane Eyre Hathersage Trail is a 4.

Jane Eyre Hathersage Trail is a 4.8-mile loop from Hathersage, climbing to Stanage Edge before returning by Cattis-side Moor, Moorseats and St Michael’s churchyard. It pairs Jane Eyre landmarks with a gritstone ridge walk. Allow three to four hours for about 316 metres of ascent.

Baulk Lane and the path by Brookfield Manor are the gentler opening; the house is only glimpsed from the path. Past North Lees Hall, the views open before a steep climb onto Stanage Edge. Follow the ridge south for wide moorland views, then descend across Cattis-side Moor toward Carrhead Rocks. The halls are linked with Jane Eyre’s fictional homes, though the exact inspiration for Thornfield is debated. The return is less obvious at occupied Moorseats: follow the public footpath through the yard, not a driveway. Moorseats Wood and muddy fields lead to St Michael’s, where local tradition places Little John’s grave.

Start in Hathersage near The George; Oddfellows Road car park is a nearby village option. Cafés and pubs are back in the village, not on the ridge. Expect a steep, open climb and take care with wayfinding on the return. Dogs can use the public paths; on open-access land, keep them on a lead no longer than two metres from 1 March to 31 July and around livestock at all times. Follow signs for any local restrictions.
