Trail guide
Bacon-Butterfield Ranch Trail is a mostly flat dirt-and-gravel out-and-back from the Campground Store through the Bacon Ranch historic area to the Butterfield homestead. The saved line covers about 1.35 miles each way; plan on roughly 2.8 miles round trip and about 1.5–2 hours if you walk to Butterfield and return. It suits a day when you want an easy valley walk and a break from Pinnacles’ steeper rock trails. If you’re short on time, turn around at Bacon Ranch; its buildings and signs come first.
Start from the day-use parking behind the East Entrance Visitor Center and Campground Store, then take the northbound road just to the right of the store. It passes solar panels, crosses a wooden bridge over Sandy Creek and reaches Bacon Ranch. The 1894 house, barn, blacksmith shop, garage and corral sit together around the historic area; interpretive signs tell the ranch story. This is the clearest payoff for the shorter version, so give it a few minutes before turning back.
Past Bacon Ranch, the old road follows a dry creek briefly, then opens onto bottomland fields and valley oaks. A second group of old ranch buildings and corrals marks the Butterfield homestead in the open valley. Return the same way. A track appears to continue north toward Highway 25, but the public connection beyond the homestead is unclear; this mapped walk turns at Butterfield rather than promising a through-route.
The dirt route is about four feet wide and stays nearly level, but has little shade. Water and restrooms are available only back in developed areas; there is no drinking water or restroom at Bacon Ranch. A picnic table and shade trees at the ranch make a good pause. For this full walk, leave pets behind: leashed pets have a narrow exception close to the dirt road through the Bacon historic area, but the rule does not clearly extend to Butterfield. Despite the flat grade, this route is not easily wheelchair accessible.
