Trail guide
This is a 5.8-mile out-and-back from Bench Trailhead at Pinnacles Campground, through the Chalone Creek valley to the South Wilderness Trail's public endpoint. Expect three to four hours. Much of the walk is nearly level beneath valley oaks, but the route is unmaintained and its tread can fade into creek gravel. Choose it for open oak savanna and birding; pick another hike if you want Pinnacles' rock spires or a clear, signed path all the way.
From the campground, follow Bench Trail and the fire-road connection to the South Wilderness marker, then continue toward the south park boundary along the creek corridor. Open grass and oak shade trade places, with short rises where the creek and hillside pinch together. Around gravelly creek beds and a dry wash, the tread can be hard to pick out; look for its continuation and cairns. Turn around at the park boundary. A fence and private land have been reported at the end, so don't follow informal traces beyond it.
This is a low-country walk through valley-oak groves, not a route into the Pinnacles formations. The open Bench Trail sections look toward Mount Defiance; the High Peaks stay screened from that stretch. The park highlights the creek valley for bird and wildlife viewing. There is limited shade and no water along the trail, so fill up at the developed campground before starting. Pets and bicycles are prohibited on park trails; service animals are allowed.
Published figures differ: one route listing gives 6.5 miles round trip, while the map marks about 2.9 miles one way and a measured walk to the practical endpoint was about 5.8 miles total. The mapped corridor is just under 3 miles one way, so treat the round-trip distance as approximate.
