Hiking Sunset Beach via Estero Trail

A long walk to a rocky shoreSunset Beach via Estero Trail is a 7.

Sunset Beach via Estero Trail is a 7.8-mile out-and-back from Estero Trailhead to a narrow, rocky shoreline beside Drakes Estero. It crosses open coastal pasture, passes a stand of Monterey pines and a footbridge at Home Bay, then follows a separate spur to the wetland edge. Allow about four hours for the full round trip. This is a steady day hike for estuary scenery and changing habitat, not a quick stroll to a wide sandy beach.

The track starts through brushy grassland and skirts an old Christmas-tree farm before entering pines. At Home Bay, the trail crosses the breached bank of a ranch stock pond and a footbridge with benches. Pause here for the estuary and the heron and egret roosts in the pines. Beyond the bridge, the path rolls over several low pasture ridges and past stock ponds, with grazing livestock and gates along the route. Close gates behind you and take care around ruts and animal holes.

Take the right branchAbout 1.4 miles south of the footbridge, turn right onto Sunset Beach Trail.

About 1.4 miles south of the footbridge, turn right onto Sunset Beach Trail. The junction makes a useful shorter option: turn around there for a five-mile round trip. The beach spur adds another 1.4 miles each way. At the end, the name overpromises a broad strip of sand: this is mostly marshy wetland, finishing at a narrow rocky shore. At low tide, smooth pitted rocks and small tide pools reward a closer look. The view across the water reaches toward Drakes Head, Drakes Beach and Chimney Rock.

Access and footingStart at Estero Trailhead on Home Ranch Road, off Sir Francis Drake Boulevard.

Home Ranch Road is narrow, one lane wide and has few places to pull off; RVs and trailers are discouraged. The trailhead also has an information kiosk. Pack food and water for the walk. Pets are prohibited on both trails. The surface is mostly short grass and packed dirt, with uneven spots, ruts and animal holes. Winter rain can leave muddy, slick stretches, and spring brings frequent wind along the estuary.
