Trail guide
Gibraltar Rock Walk is about 900 m out and back from Willow Tree Picnic Area, following the northern end of historic Lady Carrington Drive to a sandstone overhang above the Hacking River. Allow around 45 minutes. It is an easy Grade 2 outing with roughly 12 m of climbing, a good leg-stretcher if you want a nearby stop rather than a longer bushwalk. The route map measures 865 m, so treat the total as approximate. This short version starts at Willow Tree; the longer walks from Audley or on to Calala are separate itineraries.
Most of the approach follows Lady Carrington Drive, a historic carriage route beside the Hacking River. The route reaches Gibraltar Rock and returns along the same access, so there is no loop to navigate. The drive is also used for cycling; keep an eye out for bikes as you walk.
The destination is a broad, layered sandstone overhang with a rough apron of sandstone cobbles and views toward the Hacking River. A picnic table sits beneath the shelter, making it a natural place to pause before heading back. From the path, frame the low rock roof with the cobbled approach to show the scale of the overhang. Willow Tree has parking, picnic tables, barbecues and toilets; no drinking-water tap or food outlet was identified on this short route, so bring what you need.
