Overview

On the banks of the Hacking River at Audley, Ironbark Flat is the park’s classic roll‑out‑a‑rug picnic lawn: flat, shady grass right by the water with BBQs and room for kids to run. It’s an easy, low‑effort base with plenty of add‑ons nearby, so it works for mixed groups and quick day trips.

What You’ll Find

• Free gas/electric barbecues and picnic tables dotted across the grass.
• Drinking water and a cafe/kiosk next door for coffee or a simple bite.
• Flush toilets at the nearby Royal National Park Visitor Centre.
• Triangle carpark just up the road; a flat path links the lot, lawns, café and visitor centre.

• Paddle time: hire a canoe or kayak nearby and cruise the Hacking River or Kangaroo Creek.
• Short and sweet: stroll the river flats or head to Bungoona Lookout and path for easy views.
• Longer options: set out for Uloola walking track or roll along historic Lady Carrington Drive.
• School‑holiday extras: look for Junior Ranger activities and evening spotlight wildlife walks.

Wildlife Spotting

This river valley is busy with birdlife—sulphur‑crested cockatoos, crimson rosellas, yellow‑tailed black‑cockatoos and rainbow lorikeets are regulars. Around dusk and after dark, locals like possums, sugar gliders and bats emerge; by day, wallabies and reptiles are possible along the edges of the lawns. Bring binoculars if you’re even mildly into birds.

Best Time to Visit

Park hours are roughly 7:00 am–8:30 pm. For space and calm, aim for weekdays. Sundays spike mid‑morning; on weekends, arrive early or target after‑lunch hours when the crowd thins. If you’re planning a long linger, the visitor centre runs 8:30 am–4:30 pm (closed Christmas Day).

Practicalities

• Fees: vehicle entry applies ($12 per day); pay at entry stations, the visitor centre, pay machines, or via the Park’nPay app. Larger group vehicles are charged per person.
• Safety: supervise kids near the river—currents can be strong. Swim or paddle to conditions and stick to NPWS advice.
• Rules: no pets (except certified assistance animals), no smoking, no recreational drones.
• Conditions change: the park may close during poor weather or high fire danger; check alerts before you go. Reception can be limited—if there’s an emergency, call 000.

Getting There

From Princes Highway, turn into Farnell Avenue, descend to Audley Weir, cross it, then turn right into Triangle carpark. A flat path leads straight to the lawns.
