Audley Boatshed

Audley Boatshed is a boat-hire shed on the Hacking River, with canoes, kayaks and rowboats for hire. It’s a good change from another land-based stop if you want time on the water; stay on the river for a short row or head up Kangaroo Creek for the longer paddle.

The paddle to Kangaroo Creek goes about 2 km upstream and returns the same way: 4 km round trip. It’s an easy route; allow a few relaxed hours. On the creek, sandstone cliffs rise above eucalypts and rainforest. Everyone in a hired boat has to wear a supplied life jacket.

Paddleboats and rowboats offer a steadier platform if you need one. Access is assessed as medium, though a detailed step-free route to the shed isn’t documented. If that matters for your visit, confirm the launch setup before you go.

Kingfishers, turtles and lace monitors may be around the creek, and a koala may be up in the canopy. Treat those as possibilities, not a checklist; the reward is the slow look at the riverbanks as you paddle.

Boat hire at Audley has operated since 1893; that dates the hire tradition, not necessarily the present shed. A dam across the Hacking River in 1883 created a lake-like reach for pleasure craft. The place name followed in 1884, commemorating Lord Audley’s 1864 survey camp at the river-and-creek confluence.

Allambie Flat is next to the boatshed, with parking and flush public toilets. Audley picnic areas have tables, drinking water and free gas or electric barbecues. The Audley Dance Hall Cafe is a separate nearby lunch stop. The approach roads are sealed and suitable for 2WD vehicles; pets are not permitted except certified assistance animals.
