Royal National Park, NSW
A hard, rocky 7 km return to Winifred Falls
Overview
Mount Bass Trail to Winifred Falls is about 7 km (4.4 miles) return from Bundeena Drive. Follow Mount Bass fire trail as it narrows to bush track, cross creek shallows, and descend steeply to the broad falls and pool on South West Arm Creek. It is a hard, rough outing; allow 3 to 4 hours. This is the longer Mount Bass approach, not the separate, shorter Winifred Falls Firetrail walk.

Trail guide
The wider track gives way to a narrower, rockier bush route. It drops to a creek, climbs over a spur, and winds along a ridge where Sydney's CBD sits in the distance. After the managed track ends, the turns toward the falls can be easy to miss. Slow down at junctions and use an offline map; a faint tread or a marker alone is not enough to identify the right branch.
South West Arm Creek spills over a broad rock shelf into a pool. The final approach crosses shallow water near the upper falls, so expect wet feet and judge the crossing before you commit. The path is steep and rocky near the creek, and rocks beside the water can be slippery. Turn around if the flow or footing feels unsafe.
A separate creek-side extension follows a steep, rocky descent to a pool below the falls, then continues about 300 m along or above the creek to a larger pool marked by boulders. That rough side trip is not part of the mapped 7 km return, and it is an easy one to skip if you're tired or the rocks are wet.
Start at the Mount Bass access on Bundeena Drive, not at the Winifred Falls Firetrail entrance. Free parking is reported at the Bundeena Drive start, but the amount of space and trailhead facilities aren't established. I couldn't confirm toilets or drinking water along this route, so plan to carry what you need. Dogs and other pets aren't permitted in NSW national parks.
