Gunjulla Flat picnic area

Overview

A small, rustic pull-off on McKell Avenue, Gunjulla Flat Picnic Area is the kind of place you use for a quick, peaceful break rather than a full day out. It sits on the western side of the park near Waterfall and makes a handy breather for drivers and road cyclists, with a few picnic tables tucked into heath and eucalypt bush.

What you'll see

Expect a low-key bush scene with good birdlife. The surrounding heath attracts fantail cuckoos, pigeons and quails, and when wildflowers bloom in spring, honeyeaters and wattlebirds get busy—binoculars earn their keep here.

Getting there and facilities

Turn off Princes Highway at Waterfall train station and follow McKell Avenue about 1.5km; the sealed road is fine for 2WD and there’s parking on-site. Facilities are minimal: picnic tables only. There are no toilets here—use Waterfall Station or the facilities at Garie Beach instead. Mobile reception can be limited.

Nearby options

If you want to stretch the legs properly, you’re a short drive from Couranga walking track and the Forest Path. Lady Carrington Drive is another classic for a longer walk or ride along the river.

Fees, hours and alerts

Royal National Park is generally open 7:00am–8:30pm and vehicle entry fees apply (about $12 per car per day). Pay at entry stations, pay machines, Audley Visitor Centre, or via the Park’nPay app. Conditions can change—closures may occur for weather or fire danger. As of November 27, 2025, a total fire ban is in effect and some areas of the park close from sunset to sunrise on select days for a deer control program until December 19, 2025.

Best time to visit

Hit it early if you’re here for birds—the morning chorus is the draw. Spring (September–November) is prime for wildflowers and nectar-feeders. This is a quick-stop picnic nook, so pair it with a nearby walk if you want a bigger outing.
