Big Meadows Lodge

Big Meadows Lodge is the seasonal lodge at Skyline Drive mile 51.2, in Shenandoah’s central Big Meadows area. The timber-and-stone main building sits among detached cabins and meadowland, with a restaurant, taproom and craft shop under its roof. Stay here for an in-park base with a strong sense of place and broad valley views; if you want a modern, uniform hotel room, this deliberately rustic lodge may not be your style.

The choices range from rooms in the main lodge to small detached cabins, suites and other room styles, all within walking distance of the main building. The buildings and room setups differ, so check the exact room’s amenities and accessibility before booking. Some guests find the rooms dated, while others are comfortable with the old-fashioned character; don’t assume every room has the same conveniences. Accessible rooms are listed, but confirm the specific setup you need.

Spottswood Dining Room serves a seasonal menu, while New Market Taproom offers lighter fare, beer and local wine. The craft shop is in the main lodge too, and there’s pet-friendly outdoor terrace seating. Menu details and service vary with the season, so check what’s open before planning a meal around it.

The lodge has wide views over the Shenandoah Valley, and its western side is a good place to catch the evening light. Haze and growing vegetation can soften or partly block some of the long views, so keep your expectations flexible. The terrace and the lodge’s rustic rooms make the setting part of the stay rather than a view you have to hike to.

The lodge was built in 1939 by the Virginia Sky-Line Company, using the rustic design approach that shaped much of Shenandoah’s early visitor development: local materials, traditional building methods and siting that worked with the land and its views. The wider Big Meadows landscape still reads as a planned cluster of visitor facilities rather than a single hotel dropped beside the road.

Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated Shenandoah National Park at Big Meadows in 1936. Earlier in the decade, Civilian Conservation Corps workers made Big Meadows a gliding site, building a runway and temporary hangar; their work here also included trails, shelters and picnic features. The lodge usually operates from spring into late fall, so check seasonal dates for both lodging and dining before making plans.
