“You're coming up on Big Meadows, a broad grassy opening in the middle of all this forest. I'd stop here for a short wander, especially if you want to stretch your legs without a major hike.”

More about Harry F. Byrd Sr. Visitor Center

Get oriented at mile 51The Harry F. Byrd Sr.

The Harry F. Byrd Sr. Visitor Center is Shenandoah’s largest visitor center, across Skyline Drive from Big Meadows. Make it an early stop if you want a ranger’s help choosing hikes or sorting out a day on the road. The center has maps, a staffed information desk, accessible public restrooms, free Wi-Fi and a Park Store with books, maps, clothing and souvenirs. Cell service is unreliable across much of the park, so Wi-Fi here can be useful before you head back out. For grab-and-go food, the separate Big Meadows Wayside is at mile 51.2. When Skyline Drive closes for severe weather, the visitor center closes too, so check road access before heading up.

The exhibits tell the larger storyInteractive displays and short films follow Shenandoah’s creation and development, then look at…

Interactive displays and short films follow Shenandoah’s creation and development, then look at how changing ideas about public lands shaped the landscape. Give yourself a little time to walk through them instead of making this only a map pickup. A tactile exhibit offers another way into the park’s story, and some exhibits ask visitors to think about its future.

A sign tied to Lewis MountainFind the original Lewis Mountain sign inside.

Find the original Lewis Mountain sign inside. When Shenandoah opened in segregated Virginia, Black visitors were excluded from the park’s other restaurants, lodges and campgrounds. Lewis Mountain was developed to provide a picnic area, campground, cabins and restaurant for Black visitors. Park facilities were integrated by 1950, and some Lewis Mountain facilities remain in use today. The sign links this visitor center to a difficult part of the park’s history.

Iron Mike and the CCCThe bronze Iron Mike statue stands outside the center.

The bronze Iron Mike statue stands outside the center. It honors Civilian Conservation Corps crews who built much of the park infrastructure that is still in use. The statue puts a human face on the work behind the roads and facilities you see along Skyline Drive.

Inside, chairs sit beside large windows facing the meadow. It’s a pleasant place to pause and look across the landscape from indoors. Big Meadows lies directly across Skyline Drive and makes an easy separate stop if you have time.
