Overview

Gooney Manor Overlook is one of the first viewpoints you’ll hit after entering from the north, an easy pullout on Skyline Drive with panoramic looks over the Gooney Manor/Browntown valley. It’s a classic quick-stop view—step out of the car and you’re in the scenery.

What You’ll See

Expect wide, west-facing vistas over rolling farmland and forested hills, with distant ridgelines on clear days. The angle is great for warm late-day light, and some photographers even use it for astrophotography when skies cooperate.

Why Stop Here

  • Fast reward: big views with zero hiking.
  • Sunset potential: the western exposure often glows in the evening.
  • A small bonus: look for a faint, informal path (about 250 feet) to a natural rock ledge for a slightly different perspective.

Geology Note

That rock ledge is granodiorite—granite-like intrusive rock that forms a sturdy, textured perch for taking in the valley scene.

Wildlife

Look up for soaring hawks, ravens, and vultures riding the thermals. White-tailed deer are common in the area, and you might spot turkeys. Black bears live here, though sightings from the overlook are uncommon.

Practicalities

There are no facilities—no restrooms, water, or trash cans—just a standard Skyline Drive pullout with limited parking. If you follow the brushy spur to the ledge, wear long pants and do a tick check afterward, as the park advises for this area.

Best Time to Visit

  • Sunset: the view faces west and often lights up late in the day.
  • Fall weekends: arrive early; leaf-peeping crowds can fill the small lot.
  • Winter: leaf-off can expand the vistas, and traffic is lighter (road closures are possible in storms).
