Gooney Manor Overlook is a roadside pullout at mile 7.3, near the Front Royal end of Skyline Drive. From 1,930 feet, you look southwest over Browntown Valley to the wooded ridges beyond. It is an easy pause along the drive, but its broad valley view can feel familiar after several other overlooks, so skip it if you are trying to save time.
Gooney Manor was part of a royal land grant to Thomas, 6th Lord Fairfax, in the 1700s. A few families lived there before 1750, but the surviving record does not preserve exactly who they were. Settlement grew in the 1770s as people leased Fairfax land. After Fairfax died in 1781, his heirs began selling Gooney Manor land around 1812, giving leaseholders the chance to become landowners.
