Snead Farm

Snead Farm is a historic farmstead in Shenandoah’s North District, best known for its white wooden barn and the stone remains around it. You reach it on foot, and the barn is closed to entry. I’d treat it as a short history stop within a hike, not a destination that needs a separate outing.

The trailhead is across Skyline Drive from Dickey Ridge Visitor Center, at mile 5.1. The short out-and-back to the barn is about 0.7 mile round trip. For a fuller walk, continue onto Snead Farm Loop for a 3.7-mile circuit, rated moderate, with 580 feet of climbing; allow about 2½ hours. Distances can look longer in route accounts that start from the visitor-center lot or picnic area, so check the starting point before comparing mileage.

The barn stands above a stone foundation, with an open passage at ground level. A low stone root cellar sits behind it; nearby, stone steps and the outline of the former house mark the home site. On the longer circuit, an open stretch leads to a separate west-facing overlook. At the barn, step back enough to include its stone base and the clearing, then look behind it for the cellar and house remains.

The farm remained privately owned and active into the 1950s. The cellar was built into the slope to store vegetables, fruit, and nuts. The barn, cellar, and stone home remains tell a fuller story of a family farm than the barn alone.

This is an exterior visit reached by trail; the barn is not open to visitors. The trail does not meet ADA accessibility guidelines, and dogs are allowed only on a leash no longer than six feet. Park by Dickey Ridge Visitor Center, then cross Skyline Drive to the trailhead.
