Gooney Run Overlook

Overview

Just south of the Front Royal entrance, Gooney Run Overlook (around milepost 6.8) is one of the first big views you hit on Skyline Drive. It’s a classic pull-off with a stone wall and a handful of parking spots—an easy, no-hike taste of what the drive is all about.

What You’ll See

The view sweeps across the Gooney Run/“Gooney Manor” valley, with layered Blue Ridge ridgelines rolling off to the horizon. It’s oriented for afternoon glow and sunsets, and the scene pops in fall when the hillsides ignite with color. In full summer, foliage can partially frame the view, but it’s still a pretty stop.

A Quick Stop with a Stretch Option

While most people snap a photo and move on, there’s a yellow-blazed horse trail leaving from this overlook area toward Indian Run Overlook and down into Hickerson Hollow. It follows the line of an old mountain road—easy to follow if you want a short, quiet wander before getting back in the car.

A Little Context

Locals long called the valley below “Gooney Manor,” a name you’ll still see on historic surveys and Civil War–era maps. Stand at the wall and you’re looking over centuries of settlement history, plus a landscape carved by streams working these hollows for a very long time.

Wildlife

Keep an eye on the air currents: hawks and vultures often ride the updrafts. Songbirds are common, deer browse the edges at dawn and dusk, and—rarely—you might spot a black bear in the vicinity.

Best Time to Visit

• Weekdays or early mornings for a quiet stop; late afternoon to sunset for the best light.
• Peak color season (October weekends) gets busy—arrive earlier or later in the day.

• No restrooms or water here; the nearest facilities are at Dickey Ridge Visitor Center (about milepost 4.6).
• Parking is just a small pullout—don’t plan to linger long in peak times.
