Hazel River Falls

Hazel River Falls is a backcountry waterfall destination in Shenandoah Wilderness: two small cascades in a wooded, rock-walled hollow. The draw is the tucked-away setting, with boulders, little cave openings and shaded rocks by the water, rather than a tall plunge. Go if you want a substantial hike with a quiet waterfall payoff; skip it if you are after a quick roadside stop.

Plan on 5.3 miles round trip, about five hours and 1,070 feet of elevation gain. The park rates it moderate, but the last short approach is steep and the return includes climbing back out.

Start at Meadow Spring Parking Area on Skyline Drive at mile 33.5. Follow the yellow-blazed Hazel Mountain Trail past Buck Ridge Trail, then turn left at the fork onto the yellow-blazed White Rocks Trail. At the next trailpost, turn right toward the falls. The trail drops gradually for much of the way, then the final spur descends sharply; save energy for that section and the climb back to the main trail. Return to Meadow Spring the same way.

The waterfall area has two small cascades among rock walls and boulders, with shallow cave-like openings nearby and a flat shaded rock where hikers have paused. The falls are modest in height, so the setting is more rewarding than raw scale. Water flow varies; fuller spring flow can make the cascades more striking.

Meadow Spring is a small shared parking area for several hikes, and it has filled on busy sunny weekend visits; an early start is a sensible bet. The park lists the hike as year-round with no reservation required, though a park entrance fee applies. It is not ADA accessible. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet. For a photo, keep a foreground rock and the surrounding boulder wall in frame with the water; a tight crop of the cascade loses the sense of how enclosed this spot is.
