Trail guide
Hazel River–White Rocks is an 8.5-mile loop from Meadow Spring Parking, linking Hazel Mountain, White Rocks, and Hazel River. It suits hikers who want more than the shorter waterfall walk: you get the rocky White Rocks ridge, a steep side trip to the cave and falls, and a full return through the river valley. Allow five to seven hours. The route uses some of Hazel Mountain Trail twice, first on the way down and again on the return.
From the parking area, go down Hazel Mountain Trail for about 1.6 miles, then turn left onto White Rocks. The long option continues beyond the Cave/Falls junction, turns onto Hazel River Trail, then joins Hazel Mountain Trail for the return to the same lot. There are several trail changes, so keep track of the named junctions instead of turning back at the falls. An old cemetery is noted near the early Hazel Mountain and White Rocks stretch; its history is not known.
The Cave/Falls spur is steep, with stone steps leading down to a small cave and a pair of cascades. The upper fall pours beside a huge boulder into a rocky pool. On White Rocks, the ridge has a mix of wooded stretches and occasional open outcrops; from those openings you can see toward Marys Rock, Pass Mountain, and Oventop Mountain. At the falls, include the boulder and pool in a photo so the cascade has some scale.
After White Rocks, the route drops steeply more than 200 feet in a quarter-mile to Hazel River. The crossing can be hazardous in spring and after rain. If the water is unsafe, turn back; climbing out on White Rocks is steep. Beyond the river, Hazel River Trail follows an old roadbed and climbs steadily toward Hazel Mountain. That sustained climb is the biggest effort of the circuit before the return on Hazel Mountain.
Use Meadow Spring Parking Area on Skyline Drive at mile 33.5; a park entrance pass is required. Dogs are allowed on this route on leash no longer than six feet. If you want the falls without the long circuit, the separate Hazel River Falls hike is 5.3 miles round trip from the same parking area and takes about five hours; it retraces the route and skips the river loop.
