Buck Hollow Overlook is a roadside pull-off near milepost 33, with a broad view east-northeast over the Blue Ridge foothills. It is a short stop rather than a hike, and sunrise is its strongest draw. If you are waiting for dawn, a warm layer is sensible. Restrooms and drinking water at the pull-off are not confirmed, so plan this as a view stop. Skyline Drive can close in bad weather; check the road status before you head up.
Look for Skinner Ridge on the left, Buck Ridge crossing the middle-right, and Hazel Mountain farther right, with Sperryville near the horizon. At sunrise, light picks out the overlapping ridges; low cloud can settle between them. For a photo, face east-northeast and include the nearby shrubs along the lower edge to give the distant layers some scale. The roadside viewpoint gives you the view without an approach walk.
Sperryville was established beside the Thornton River in 1820. The river powered local industry, including the Smoot Tannery, established in 1867. From here the town sits small on the far side of Buck Ridge, part of the same landscape that once supplied water power.
The roadcut exposes strongly foliated Pedlar granodiorite, with small garnet-bearing lenses about two to three inches across. On clear days, distant Devil Stairs exposures mark gorge-like features formed along fractures in the Catoctin Formation.
