Hazel Mountain Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Skyline Drive, around 2,770 feet above sea level. The southeast view stacks a tree-topped rock outcrop in the foreground, Buck Ridge across the middle and Hazel Mountain in the distance. Stop for a brief look at Blue Ridge geology; this is a pullout, not a hike or a long visit.
The outcrop is Pedlar granodiorite, a rock that formed miles below the surface and now makes up the Blue Ridge’s base. Start at the stone in front, then follow the view back across Buck Ridge to Hazel Mountain: the wide vista doubles as a look at what built these mountains.
Keep the tree and rock low in a photo, with Buck Ridge and Hazel Mountain behind them; those layers make the distance easier to read. The overlook faces southeast, and sunrise is a repeat visitor favorite. Low clouds can hide the ridges that give this view its depth.
