South Marshall is a wooded Appalachian Trail summit with several rocky ledges along its western flank. The ledges, reached before the high point, make this a worthwhile walk if you want a broad view in Shenandoah’s North District. The first opening is about 0.9 mile north of Gravel Springs Gap; the wooded summit is around 1.1 miles in.

Take the Appalachian Trail northPark at Gravel Springs Gap near Skyline Drive milepost 17.

Park at Gravel Springs Gap near Skyline Drive milepost 17.6, cross the drive, and follow the white-blazed Appalachian Trail north. More rocky openings follow the first view. Turn back when you’ve had your fill, or continue toward North Marshall for a paired-summit out-and-back of about 4.5 miles. Cell service is unreliable in Shenandoah, so download the park map before you leave reception.

Look across the valleyThe ledges provide rocky perches above the forest.

The ledges provide rocky perches above the forest. Skyline Drive winds below; Hogback Mountain is nearby, Dickey Ridge frames the north, and Great North Mountain is faint across the valley on a clear day. For a photo, keep some of the ledge in the foreground so the view has scale. Low cloud can hide the panorama.

The two peaks were once called Bluff Mountain and were later renamed for John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States. Appointed by John Adams, he served 35 years, the longest tenure of any U.S. chief justice.
