“A gray or green patch on a boulder may be a lichen. Look for thin crusts stuck to the surface or little leaf-like flaps. A lichen brings together a fungus and algae, or certain bacteria, that make food from sunlight.”

North Marshall is a Blue Ridge summit on the Mount Marshall ridge in Shenandoah's North District. The high point is wooded; the payoff is on rocky ledges nearby, where a short Appalachian Trail outing opens onto the Blue Ridge. Start at the Mount Marshall parking area on Skyline Drive and follow the AT about 0.4 mile to the first outcrop, then continue roughly 0.1 mile to the second ledge. Allow about 1 mile round trip and 350 feet of climbing to visit both. Keep walking when you reach the wooded high point: the panorama is at the rocks, not the top.

The first ledge looks west and south over folded Blue Ridge ridges, with Page Valley and Browntown to the north. South Marshall and Hogback Mountain stand out on the nearer skyline; Stony Man and Massanutten, including Signal Knob, sit farther away. Continue to the second outcrop for a northwest-facing view.

Put a little of the exposed rock along the bottom of a phone photo and the layered ridges above it. The foreground shows that you're standing on a ledge and gives the valley depth; a frame filled only with distant mountains loses that sense of place. The second outcrop offers a different, northwest angle. Cloud and fog can obscure the distant ridges.

Greenstone from old lavaThe exposed rock at both Mount Marshall summits includes greenstone.

The exposed rock at both Mount Marshall summits includes greenstone. It began as basalt lava about 570 million years ago, then heat and pressure during Appalachian mountain building transformed it. Chlorite and epidote minerals give the rock its greenish cast.

Mount Marshall is closed to backcountry camping above 3,200 feet, and North Marshall is higher than that. The restriction applies to overnight camping, not to day access to the summit and ledges.
