Parked right off Skyline Drive around milepost 18.5 at 2,675 feet, Gimlet Ridge Overlook is a low‑key stop with a high‑reward view. It’s one of the classic roadside overlooks built to showcase the Blue Ridge scenery without a big effort.

What You’ll See

This is a north‑facing, layered vista that drops over Gimlet Ridge into Browntown Valley, with the broader Shenandoah Valley beyond. Signal Knob anchors the horizon straight ahead. Look right for Dickey Ridge and left for Hogback Mountain—the view funnels your eye through ridges rather than a super-wide panorama, which is exactly its charm.

Why Stop Here

It’s typically less busy than the headliners, so you can actually hear the wind and take your time framing photos. Fall color is especially good here as the slopes stack up in oranges and reds.

Quick Trails & Better Angles

From the north end of the overlook, a short connector (about 25 yards) reaches the Appalachian Trail and a slightly higher perch above the parking area—worth the extra minute for a cleaner sightline.

Practicalities

This is a simple pullout: standard overlook parking and views, no restrooms, no water, no tables. Plan those needs at larger facilities elsewhere in the park.

Photography Notes

North‑facing scenes shine in early morning or late afternoon when the light rakes across the ridges. Clear days deliver long views to Signal Knob and the valley layers.
