Range View Overlook

Overview

A classic Skyline Drive stop at milepost 17.1, Range View Overlook serves up the park’s signature blue-on-blue ridgelines from 2,810 feet. It’s a quick pullout with a sweeping, south-facing view that feels wonderfully free of visible development.

What You’ll See

• Layered mountain ranges fading into the distance—those deep blues are the Blue Ridge doing what they do best.
• On clear days, you can pick out Jenkins Mountain in the foreground and distant icons like Old Rag, Stony Man, Mary’s Rock, and Hogback.
• Seasonal drama: lush greens in summer, blazing foliage in fall, and occasional winter snow.

Why Stop Here

This one nails the “endless ranges” look without clutter. Photographers love the golden-hour light at sunrise and sunset, and it’s often calmer than some busier overlooks if you time it right. Star gazing after sunset can be lovely on clear nights.

Wildlife

Like many overlooks here, keep an eye out for deer browsing the edges and raptors riding thermals. Black bears do roam the park—observe from a distance if you’re lucky enough to spot one.

Logistics & Amenities

It’s a standard Skyline Drive pullout with paved parking. No restrooms, water, or picnic tables. There is trail access here for the Range View Cabin route, but most visitors simply stop for the view and move on.
