Mount Marshall Overlook is a roadside pullout on Skyline Drive at mile 19, where the road reaches about 2,850 feet. It looks southeast across Virginia’s Piedmont. Stop for the broad view if you’re already driving this stretch; this is a short scenic pause, not the trail access for the Mount Marshall summits.
The view opens across layered ridges toward the lower country to the southeast. This is a good place to take in the scale of the landscape without committing to a hike. The overlook is also a photo stop: the broad southeast view is the subject, and when fog settles below the ridges at sunrise, the light can make it especially striking. That foggy scene is a lucky condition, not a guarantee.
The land around Mount Marshall was once part of the Manor of Leeds, a land grant held by Thomas, 6th Lord Fairfax. After Fairfax died, his heirs sold the land to speculators, and John Marshall bought land in the area. He later served as Chief Justice of the United States from 1801 to 1835.
