Thornton Hollow Overlook

Overview

Perched at milepost 27.5 on Skyline Drive (elev. 2,460 feet), Thornton Hollow Overlook serves up a big, open look east into Thornton Hollow. Mount Marshall frames the left side of the view; Oventop Mountain sits to the right. It’s an easy roll-in, step-out kind of stop that punches well above its weight for scenery.

What You’ll See

Expect layered Blue Ridge ridgelines and a deep valley sweep—lush greens in spring and summer, knockout color in autumn, and crisp, far-reaching views in winter. The overlook faces east, so the morning light rakes across the hollow and mountains beautifully.

Why It’s Worth a Stop

This one’s a reliable sunrise catcher that often feels calmer than the headliner overlooks. It’s also conveniently placed if you’re cruising toward Thornton Gap from the north—an ideal pull-off before you drop into the gap.

A Short Stretch From Here

A service road leaves from the overlook and climbs to a backcountry shelter. The surface is generally smooth, but there’s a notably steep segment—an overall easy outing if you want a quick leg-stretcher beyond the guardrail view.

Wildlife

Like many Skyline Drive perches, you may spot deer in the low light, raptors riding ridge updrafts, and, more occasionally, black bears across the slopes. Bring binoculars if you like to scan distant ridges.

Know Before You Go

• No facilities: no restrooms or picnic tables.
• Small paved parking area; it can fill at peak leaf season and on sunny weekends.
• Conditions change fast at this elevation—expect wind and occasional fog. Check Skyline Drive status in winter.

• Sunrise is the sweet spot thanks to the east-facing view.
• Weekdays or early mornings beat the crowds; fall weekends are the busiest.
• Photographers: dawn to early morning for warm side light; late afternoon works too, but sunrise wins here.
