Thornton Hollow Overlook is a roadside pull-off at 2,460 feet, opening east across its namesake hollow. It’s a short pause for a broad panorama; Mount Marshall anchors the left side, with Oventop Mountain farther right. This is a view stop, not a destination hike.
The overlook faces east, so sunrise can light up the mountain layers, and autumn color is another reason to stop. Haze can soften the far ridges. For a photo, frame the hollow with several ridgelines so the view reads as a deep valley instead of a row of peaks.
Near the south end, the rock cut across Skyline Drive exposes Catoctin basalt with pale, fibrous anthophyllite, a naturally occurring asbestos mineral. It’s an unusual detail at a stop most people take in for the view.
