A small pullout at mile 28.5 on Skyline Drive (elev. 2,485 ft) with a parking area and an orientation sign. Decades ago this spot was cleared for a 360-degree panorama; forest regrowth has since swallowed most of that view, so don’t expect a grand Shenandoah Valley vista from the lot itself.
The View (and how to get it)
The trick here is to cross Skyline Drive. On clear days you can pick out Hogback, Fork, and Oventop Mountains from the opposite side of the road. Use the on-site map to match what you’re seeing to the named peaks.
Vibe and Who Will Like It
It’s a low-key, less crowded pull-off—nice for a breather between bigger stops. Photographers and foliage-chasers still find it worthwhile in spring and especially autumn when the surrounding forest lights up.
Wildlife
Expect the usual Shenandoah suspects in the woods around the gap—deer and a variety of birds are commonly spotted.
Amenities and Nearby
On-site you’ll find parking and the interpretive/orientation sign. No restrooms, water, or picnic tables. This pullout also functions as trailhead parking for nearby trails.
