More about Thornton Gap Entrance

Your Route 211 gatewayThornton Gap Entrance is the staffed gate from US 211 onto Skyline Drive at mile 31.

Thornton Gap Entrance is the staffed gate from US 211 onto Skyline Drive at mile 31.5, east of Luray and west of Sperryville. The 105-mile road follows the crest of the Blue Ridge and is the park’s only public road. Use this entrance for the central stretch: head south toward Big Meadows and the Harry F. Byrd Sr. Visitor Center, or north for more hiking access along Skyline Drive.

Pay and find the entranceAn entrance fee applies whether you drive Skyline Drive or hike in from the boundary.

An entrance fee applies whether you drive Skyline Drive or hike in from the boundary. The park is cashless, so have a card or a valid park pass ready. GPS can send drivers to the wrong entrance; approach on US 211 between Luray and Sperryville rather than following a generic park pin.

Give the drive timeMileposts on the west side of Skyline Drive help you find facilities and trailheads after you…

Mileposts on the west side of Skyline Drive help you find facilities and trailheads after you enter. The full drive takes about three hours in clear conditions, so don’t treat it as a quick shortcut. It is generally open around the clock, but weather can close it; check the road status before setting out.
