Dune Overlook

Dune Overlook is a two-level, ramped viewing deck at Stop 3 of Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, on a plateau at the eastern edge of Sleeping Bear Dunes’ four-square-mile dune complex. The deck sits atop a dune about 200 feet high. Make time for it if you want the broad view without walking down into loose sand; the overlook is also wheelchair accessible.

From here you can pick out Glen Lake and the large white buildings of D.H. Day Farm, then trace the dunes toward Lake Michigan, Sleeping Bear Bay, Pyramid Point and the Manitou Islands. The vista works because you see inland water and the open lake in the same sweep. For a photo, keep some pale dune slope in the foreground and Lake Michigan on the horizon so the layers stay clear.

These are perched dunes: sand gathered on top of older sand-and-gravel glacial moraine. Westerly winds carry moraine sand up the bluff. Some dune fronts advance a few feet a year, while plants hold other slopes in place. Stay on the overlook and marked surfaces; footpaths across the fragile dunes can take years to grow back.

Pierce Stocking was a lumberman who planned a road to open up the bluffs’ views. Work began in the early 1960s, and his scenic road opened in 1967 as Sleeping Bear Dunes Park. Stocking operated it until his death in 1976. It joined the Lakeshore in 1977, and the drive later took his name after public opinion favored honoring him.

Two waysides at Stop 3 are titled First People of the Place and Stories in the Sky. Picnic Mountain shares this stop cluster, with picnic tables and a raised grill; there’s no food vendor identified here. The National Park Service lists a restroom for the Stop 3 area, and Picnic Mountain has restrooms near its parking lot plus drinking water in summer.

The deck has two bench-lined levels and a ramp, so you can take in the panorama without climbing a sandy trail. The scenic drive is a one-way 7.4-mile road with 12 informational stops; allowing about two hours to stop at all of them gives this view room without rushing. A park entrance pass is required. Vehicles generally use the road from late May into late October; in winter and spring it remains open for walk-in recreation while the road is closed to cars. Trailers aren’t allowed, and vehicles over 13 feet 6 inches can’t clear the route.
