Sleeping Bear Dune Overlook

Sleeping Bear Dune Overlook is a wooden viewing platform on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, facing the namesake dune roughly a mile away. Make the extra stop if you want to see the dune and hear its story. Stop 9 gives you the closer Lake Michigan overlook; the longer walk to stop 10 trades that bluff-edge view for a sightline back toward the dune.

From the Lake Michigan Overlook entry at stop 9, follow a steep path and loose sand for about 1,200 feet to this platform. There is no separate drive-up parking area at stop 10. The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a 7.4-mile one-way loop with 12 marked stops; give it about two hours if you plan to stop at all of them. A park entrance pass is required.

Vehicles usually use the drive from late May through late October. In winter and spring, the road remains open for hiking and walk-in recreation, so this is no longer a quick stop from a car. The route is not wheelchair-accessible and involves steep trail and loose sand. The platform has benches. Vault toilets are at the drive entrance, while running water and flush toilets are available at Picnic Mountain elsewhere on the loop.

The dune sits about a mile away along the bluff, with Lake Michigan and sandy, vegetated slopes in the scene. Keep some water and bluff in the frame instead of zooming all the way in; they show where the dune sits in the landscape. The wooden rail can give a photo a clear foreground.

This is a perched dune: wind carried sand from the upper Lake Michigan bluff inland onto a plateau. The windblown sand is a thin layer over sandy glacial deposits, and the dune is estimated to be about 2,000 years old. From here, you are looking at a landform made by sand moving well above the lake shore.

The dune once stood about 234 feet high with dense plant cover. It measured 132 feet in 1961 and 103 feet in 1980. Waves wore away the base of its supporting plateau, while wind carried off sand and vegetation. The wind-cut opening is a blowout; buried soils and old “ghost forest” trees preserve traces of earlier periods when parts of the dune were stable.

The Sleeping Bear story comes from Anishinaabe oral tradition and tells of a mother bear and two cubs. There is more than one telling. This is a sacred place within the homelands of Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi peoples, so the story is part of a living cultural landscape as well as the name of a dune.
