If you want a quiet, woodsy wander away from the dune-climb crowds, Shauger Hill delivers. This is a 2.4-mile loop (total) through classic Sleeping Bear Dunes forest—think mature beech and maple with pockets of red pine and small sandy clearings. It’s well-marked, gently rolling, and easy for most hikers.
Expect a soft, natural tread with a mix of packed dirt, roots, and some sandy stretches that make the legs work a touch harder. There aren’t big dune or lake vistas here—this one’s about shade, birdsong, and the rhythm of up-and-down hills. In spring you’ll spot wildflowers, and year-round you may see white-tailed deer and hear plenty of songbirds.
The loop intersects Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and Shauger Hill Road in a couple spots. That makes it easy to pair this hike with a quick detour to an overlook by car if you want the big views after your walk.
It’s a pleasant fitness loop—never technical, but the rolling terrain keeps it interesting. No bikes. Not ADA-accessible.
Spring and fall are prime: cool temps, wildflowers or color, and fewer bugs. Summer is perfectly fine thanks to abundant shade; just know sandy sections feel warmer. Winter use shifts to snowshoeing or cross-country skiing; the trail is managed for skiing then and pets are prohibited from Dec 1–Mar 31.
Underrated if you value solitude and shade; skip it if you’re chasing big vistas. For a mellow forest loop that feels miles from the crowds—but sits right by Pierce Stocking—Shauger Hill is a solid, low-stress pick.
Small signed lot off Shauger Hill Road near the entrance to Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive; straightforward access to the loop.
Watch for short steep pitches, hot and tiring sandy sections in summer, mosquitoes in late spring, and road crossings. In winter it’s used for skiing and pets are prohibited Dec 1–Mar 31.
