Fish and facilities

Northern pike, bluegill, largemouth bass, and pumpkinseed are among the fish commonly found in School Lake. Coho salmon may pass through in late summer on their way to a hatchery. The access has unpaved parking and a vault toilet; pets must be kept on a six-foot leash under the park's inland-lakes rules.

“You're approaching the access for School Lake, off Bohemian Road south of M twenty-two. Come for a paddle rather than a big beach: the launch has only a small strip of sand.”

School Lake Access is a compact public boat launch with a small beach on the west shore of Sleeping Bear Dunes' largest inland lake. It is a useful place to launch a canoe or kayak, fish, or wade and swim, but the beach area is limited, so come for the water access rather than a long stretch of sand. The access is off Bohemian Road a short distance south of M-22. A park pass is required for inland-lake use.

A shallow channel connects School Lake with Bass Lake, making a two-lake outing possible by canoe or kayak. School Lake is sandy-bottomed and shallow overall, with an average depth of about five feet and a deeper hole in a cove at its southwest end. NPS rules allow electric motors here, with a five-mph limit and no wake.
