The center's interpretation covers the park's beginnings, the people who lived here over time, and the early climbers who reached its peaks. Torres del Paine was established in 1959 as Parque Nacional de Turismo Lago Grey, first protecting 4,332 hectares between Grey and Nordenskjöld lakes. It later expanded to 227,298 hectares and joined UNESCO's Biosphere Reserve network in 1978.

The current complex restores facilities lost in the 2011–12 fire. Its 570-square-metre building combines visitor space with ranger accommodation, dining and service rooms, so the whole building is not an exhibit hall. Listed access features include accessible routes, videos and a restroom for visitors with disabilities.
