Trail guide
Mirador Grey Trail from Paine Grande is a rugged out-and-back on the western W arm to an intermediate rocky lookout above Lago Grey. Plan about 7.4 miles (12 km) round trip and roughly 4 to 5 hours. The distance includes the short walk between Paine Grande Refuge and the mapped path, then the same route back. This trail turns around at the first Mirador Grey, before Refugio Grey; the farther Mirador Glaciar Grey is a separate, much longer hike.
From Paine Grande, the path enters a narrow valley and climbs a rocky slope through scattered trunks left by the 2011–12 fire. At the first crest, Lago Grey opens into view, with the jagged Paine Grande massif across the water. The trail then broadens and levels out for long stretches above the shore, with a few smaller rises and dips.
The route ends at a small rocky outcrop roughly halfway toward Refugio Grey. This is the first broad look toward Grey Glacier, distant across the lake; it is a wide landscape view rather than a close approach to the ice. Give yourself a little time here before retracing the route. Continuing to Refugio Grey or the farther glacier lookout changes this into a substantially longer hike.
Leave a vehicle at Pudeto by the catamaran dock, cross Lago Pehoé to Paine Grande, then walk from the dock to the refuge and trail start. Check the current crossing schedule before setting out. Wind can rise and shift quickly on this exposed route, and rocky footing may be slippery when wet. Pets are not allowed in the park.
