Ash River Visitor Center

Ash River Visitor Center is a compact National Park Service stop in historic Meadwood Lodge, a rustic log building on Kabetogama Lake. It’s a useful place to get oriented with staff, maps, the park newspaper and a small bookstore. The exhibits and shop are modest, so I’d pair a quick look inside with some time outside instead of expecting a long indoor visit.

A path behind the lodge leads toward the shore, where you can pause for a Kabetogama Lake view. A separate short, accessible path to the Kabetogama Lake Overlook reaches a bench where pines frame the water. If you want a photo, this is the place to include both the lake and the trees rather than filling the frame with open water.

The easy walk to Sullivan Bay follows an old forest road to a shoreline picnic spot and exposed rock. That rock formed through volcanic activity more than two billion years ago, so it’s a good payoff if you like seeing the park’s geology up close. Blind Ash Bay is a different outing: a winding, rocky loop through boreal forest with lake views, and a longer commitment than the short overlook walks.

Ranger-led boat tours and the North Canoe Voyage use Ash River as a departure point when those seasonal programs are running. The North Canoe trip is a living-history outing in a 26-foot replica canoe. Offerings change by year and tours can fill, so check the current program and reserve ahead if one is part of your plan.

The center is inside historic Meadwood Lodge. Some interior doorways were built low, so watch your head as you move through the building. The lodge setting is part of the appeal; it feels more personal than a standard information desk, even though the indoor exhibits are brief.

The center is about 28 miles south of International Falls and 11 miles off Highway 53, so check its seasonal schedule before making the drive. The site has parking, a boat and small-craft launch, picnic tables, a fire pit, drinking water and accessible seasonal restrooms. There’s no food service listed; plan on a picnic or eat before you arrive.
