Trail guide
The Bison Paddock Overlook Trail is a 0.6 km (0.37 mi) paved out-and-back, usually 10–20 minutes with very little climbing. It ends above the paddock with a broad view over Waterton Valley and the mountains. This is a good stop when you want an easy outlook without turning the day into a hike.
Follow the short walkway to the viewpoint, then return the same way. The mapped corridor is about 0.18 mi one way, consistent with the 0.6 km return distance. The path is near Bison Paddock Loop Road, but pedestrians are prohibited on the vehicle loop; use the separate walk. The available directions do not identify a dedicated lot or exact parking point.
The view crosses rough fescue grassland, an important bison food source, with bison often visible in the paddock below. They are wild and unpredictable; stay on the overlook path, and keep dogs leashed and under control. Bison are often visible in spring, summer and fall as the herd shifts between seasonal paddocks. From the overlook, use the grassland as a foreground for the valley and mountain range; bison may be visible below.
Across the plain, look for low ridges called eskers, deposits left behind by the last glacial advance. The park has maintained a plains-bison herd at the paddock since 1952; after the Kenow wildfire displaced it in 2017, six bison returned in 2021 as prairie conditions recovered. Bison and Blackfoot peoples have been connected in southwestern Alberta for more than 10,000 years.
