Hiking Cameron Lakeshore Trail

An easy walk along Cameron LakeCameron Lakeshore Trail is an easy out-and-back on the lake’s west shore.

Cameron Lakeshore Trail is an easy out-and-back on the lake’s west shore. The listed distance is 3 km (1.9 mi) return, and the walk takes about one hour with minimal climbing. Choose it for a close look at the water and a long view toward the lake’s south-end headwall, not for a summit day. Face the lake from the day-use parking lot and take the trail on your right.

The distance is rounded: the mapped shoreline corridor is about 1.66 km each way, so a GPS can show close to 3.3 km after you walk back to the lot.

The maintained tread moves in and out of forest and stays close to the lake. Boardwalk sections cross wetter ground, while small openings between the trees bring back the water and mountain view. There are a few gentle rises, but no sustained climb. The trail reaches an interpretive platform near the south end; a worn path continues down toward the shore. Turn around there and return by the same route.

From the western bank, the view runs south along Cameron Lake to a lush headwall in Glacier National Park in the United States. At the far-end platform, leave a strip of water in the foreground to show the scale of the wall. Cameron Lake sits at 1,660 m on the Continental Divide. Average annual precipitation there is about 152 cm, twice the 76 cm recorded at the park gate, which helps explain the green, subalpine basin around the lake.
