Overview

Alex Knob is the big, no‑nonsense day hike for glacier views. It’s a sustained climb to a true summit, delivering some of the finest ground‑access vistas of Franz Josef/Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere. DOC rates it an advanced tramping track: expect roots, rocks, and a steady gradient rather than scrambling. Allow about 8 hours return; fit parties sometimes do it in 5.5–6.5 hours. Total distance is roughly 17 km return with around 1050–1200 m of elevation gain.

Route highlights

  • Trailhead: Alex Knob/Lake Wombat carpark on the Franz Josef Glacier access road.
  • Rātā Lookout (~2 hours up): first real glacier views and a natural breather.
  • Christmas Lookout (~1 hour beyond Rātā): excellent turnaround option if you’re short on time.
  • Summit: open tussock with sweeping views of the glacier, Main Divide, and on clear days the Tasman Sea. Return the same way.

What you’ll see

You’ll climb from lush lowland rainforest through sub‑alpine scrub to open tussock. On a clear day the lookouts and summit line up the icefall and seracs beautifully. Forest birds (tui, bellbird, kererū) are common down low; higher up you may encounter cheeky kea and see pipit skittering around the tops.

Logistics and fees

  • Parking: small trailhead carpark; if full, use the main Franz Josef Glacier car park and walk the signed track to the start.
  • Facilities: no toilets or water at the Alex Knob carpark or on the track; use the larger glacier car park beforehand.
  • Parking fees: a paid‑parking pilot at Franz Josef Glacier is scheduled from mid‑December 2025 to 30 June 2026 (NZ$5/hour or $20/day; first 20 minutes free; card only). Annual permits are available online for frequent users.
  • Dogs: not permitted.

Difficulty and safety

This is a solid workout with relentless ascent and slippery sections when wet. Weather on the West Coast shifts fast—carry warm, waterproof layers year‑round. In winter, snow is likely above Christmas Lookout; do not continue past the snowline unless you’re experienced in alpine conditions.

Best time to visit

Start early, especially in summer. Afternoon cloud often builds and smothers the glacier and summit views; aiming to be on top before midday usually pays off. Weekdays and early mornings are quieter, and the morning light tends to pop the glacier’s texture for photos.

Gear and prep

Wear sturdy boots. Carry plenty of water (there are no reliable sources), sun protection, and insect repellent. In cold or icy spells, bring extra layers and traction if conditions warrant. Check the latest weather and track status at the Visitor Centre before setting out.

Pros

  • Best non‑helicopter views of Franz Josef Glacier
  • Varied rainforest‑to‑alpine hike with multiple lookouts and a panoramic summit

Cons

  • Long, steep climb with 1000m+ of elevation gain
  • No water or toilets on the track; afternoon cloud can kill the views

Tips

  • Start before 8 am in summer to beat the typical midday cloud build‑up.
  • Carry all your water; there are no reliable sources on the track.
  • If the Alex Knob/Wombat carpark is full, use the main glacier car park and walk to the start.
  • From mid‑Dec 2025 to Jun 30, 2026, paid parking applies at Franz Josef Glacier—bring a card.
  • In winter, turn around at the snowline unless you’re experienced in alpine travel.
