Alex Knob

Alex Knob is a 1,303 m summit above Franz Josef Glacier, reached by an advanced 17.2 km return hike. This is an all-day climb, not a quick lookout: plan around an eight-hour return and save it for a day when the panorama is worth a lot of uphill work. Start early; cloud often builds over the summit in summer.

From Franz Josef, cross Waiho Bridge, turn left onto the glacier access road and continue about 2 km to the signed start beside the Alex Knob/Lake Wombat car park. If that lot is full, use the main Franz Josef Glacier car park and follow the public walking path back. Carry all the water you need; there is no source on the track. Dogs aren't allowed. Snow is likely above Christmas Lookout in winter, so turn back at the snowline unless you have winter alpine experience.

The route starts on a broad gravel path shared with the Lake Wombat walk, then climbs through forest on switchbacks. Rata Lookout is about two hours from the start; Christmas Lookout is roughly another hour on. Beyond it, the trees thin to subalpine scrub, snow tussock and alpine herbfields before the summit. Return the same way.

From the summit, Franz Josef Glacier (Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere) lies below steep valley walls, with the Southern Alps and the coast beyond. A peak-orientation table helps pick out surrounding summits. For a stronger frame, put the tussock edge in the foreground and the glacier against the broader range. Clear weather matters: lower lookouts can still show the glacier when cloud hides the summit.

Listen for tūī, korimako and kererū in the forest. Kākā and parakeets are occasional, while kea or pipits may turn up higher on the route. The upper track crosses snow tussock and alpine herbfields, with wildflowers that change through the seasons.
