Perched partway up the Alex Knob Track, Christmas Lookout is the sweet spot for glacier scenery without the all‑day push to the summit. On clear mornings you’ll stare straight across to Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere (Franz Josef Glacier) and the valley below—exactly the payoff most hikers are chasing.
Start at the Alex Knob/Lake Wombat car park on the Franz Josef Glacier access road. The lot is small and often fills at peak times; if it’s full, you can use the main Franz Josef Glacier car park and walk back along the roadside walking track to the trail start.
The track begins on a gentler shared path with Lake Wombat before narrowing and steepening. DOC times put it at about 2 hours to Rata Lookout, then roughly another hour to Christmas Lookout. Expect an “advanced” tramping track with roots, rocks, and a steady gradient; many hikers call Christmas Lookout their turnaround point if they’re not tackling the summit.
Forest gives way to sub‑alpine scrub as you climb, with a changing cast of rimu, rātā, and kāmahi giving way to New Zealand cedar and tree daisies. From the lookout, the glacier and its carved valley dominate the view. On fine days you’ll likely hear helicopter flights working the glacier.
Listen for tūī, bellbird, and kererū in the lower forest. Higher up, keep an eye out for alpine characters like kea and pipit—another reason to take your time at the lookout.
Start early. Afternoon cloud is common in summer, and mornings generally deliver the clearest views. Aim to be at your high point by late morning for the best chance of a blue‑sky glacier panorama and easier parking.
Winter often brings snow above Christmas Lookout. Only continue past the snowline if you’re experienced in alpine conditions; traction like microspikes can help on icy patches. Westland is famous for rain—pack a shell, warm layers, and be ready for slick roots on the descent.
There are good flush toilets at the main Franz Josef Glacier car park; none are noted at the Alex Knob/Lake Wombat car park or on the track. A paid‑parking pilot runs at Franz Josef car parks from mid‑December 2025 through June 30, 2026: $5/hour or $20/day, first 20 minutes free, card only. Check track and weather conditions at the local visitor centre before you go.
On the return, consider the easy 400 m side trip to Lake Wombat—quick, scenic, and a pleasant leg‑stretcher before the final stroll to the car.
