Hiking Franz Josef Glacier/Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere Walk

A short walk to a view, not the iceFranz Josef Glacier/Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere Walk is an easy out-and-back from the glacier…

Franz Josef Glacier/Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere Walk is an easy out-and-back from the glacier car park to a viewpoint in the valley. DOC lists it as 1.7 km return and 30 minutes; a recently updated walking account gives 1.2 km return, so published distances do not line up. Allow the official half-hour and check the track marker at the car park. The payoff is a look across the Waiho River toward the upper glacier, with steep forested slopes, mountain tops and waterfalls along the way. The walk does not reach the ice or the former glacier terminal: foot access farther up the valley has been cut off. If you want to get onto the glacier, arrange a separate guided trip rather than trying to continue beyond the viewing area.

Through rainforest to the valleyStart from the end-of-road car park and follow the gravel path through rainforest.

Start from the end-of-road car park and follow the gravel path through rainforest. It is mostly level at first, with brief openings toward the mountains and waterfalls, then a short uphill stretch brings you to the valley view. The grade is easy, but the last rise is the part to take slowly if you are unsteady or walking with small children. Turn around at the signed viewing area and return the same way; this is not a loop. Give yourself time to stop as the forest opens and the glacier appears between the valley walls. Cloud can hide the upper ice, but the river flats and steep-sided valley still make the end of the walk worthwhile.

A landscape still being remadeThe broad gravel floor below is part of a valley left exposed as the glacier retreats.

The broad gravel floor below is part of a valley left exposed as the glacier retreats. From the viewing area, the Waiho River winds toward the coast, while the upper glacier sits high between the slopes. The river's changing course is why the old walk onward is no longer a safe foot route. This is a useful place to see the scale of that change without attempting a longer, riskier approach. When the glacier is visible, frame the river flats low in the picture and the ice between the slopes; that shows how far the valley runs beneath it.

There is no food stop on the walk, so carry water. Warm waterproof layers, insect repellent and sun protection are useful even for a half-hour outing because conditions can change quickly in this valley.

Stay behind the safety barriers at the viewing area and do not enter the riverbed or continue up-valley toward the glacier. River surges and flooding, ice and rockfall make the restricted area hazardous. The access road and track can also close after floods, rockfall or landslides, so check DOC's current access information before driving out. Dogs are not allowed on this track.
