Hiking Peters Pool Walk

A short walk to Peters PoolPeters Pool Walk is a 1.1 km (0.

Peters Pool Walk is a 1.1 km (0.7 mile) return out-and-back from Franz Josef Glacier Valley car park. The level gravel path winds through rainforest to a small kettle lake, then you retrace it. DOC calls the walk fully accessible; the walking time is about 25 minutes, with a little extra to pause at the water. It’s an easy choice for a brief walk in the glacier valley, and dogs aren’t allowed.

Peters Pool is small, tucked into the forest at the foot of steep mountain slopes. On a calm day, the water reflects the valley walls and trees. The mirror effect fades when the surface is rippled, so go for the setting rather than expecting a close glacier viewpoint. For a reflection photo, keep the pool low in the frame so it catches the mountains and forest above it.

The pool is a kettle lake, a basin left when a block of glacial ice melted out of the surrounding moraine. Local accounts place that change around 1800, when the Franz Josef Glacier was retreating and leaving chunks of ice behind. It’s a small clue to how much ice once filled this valley.

The pool’s name comes from nine-year-old Peter Westland, who camped here with his family in 1894. Early explorers Charlie Douglas and Arthur Paul Harper named it after him. A prefabricated corrugated-iron hut with a stone fireplace once stood nearby; surveyor-explorers used it, and later guides treated it as a lunch hut on glacier expeditions.

Use the Franz Josef Glacier Valley car park at the end of Glacier Access Road, about 4 km south of Franz Josef/Waiau. This route entry covers Peters Pool and the return walk only. Continuing from the pool onto Douglas Walk adds a longer hike.
