Rata Lookout

Rata Lookout is the first named viewpoint on the Alex Knob Track above Franz Josef/Waiau, where an opening in the forest looks toward Franz Josef Glacier/Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere. It is a useful early payoff for a demanding climb and a possible turnaround before the higher viewpoints.

The lookout is about 4.5 km from the trailhead, and reaching it takes roughly two hours on foot. The full Alex Knob Track is an advanced 17.2 km return hike, estimated at eight hours, so plan this as a substantial walk rather than a quick stop.

Rata gives a more enclosed glacier view. Christmas Lookout, about 1.5 km farther along the track, opens the view more widely. Continue only if you have the time and energy for a long mountain track; Rata is a sensible place to turn around for a shorter outing.

Begin at the Alex Knob/Lake Wombat carpark beside the Franz Josef Glacier access road. If the small lot is full, use the main Franz Josef Glacier carpark and follow the public walking track back to the trail start. The lower route climbs steadily through lowland forest. Start early because cloud commonly builds on summer afternoons and can obscure the views. Carry drinking water; there is no water source along the track, and dogs are not allowed.

The lower forest includes rimu, rātā and kāmahi. Higher on the route, it changes to New Zealand cedar and tree daisies. Tūī, bellbird and kererū are regularly heard; kākā and parakeets are occasional, while kea and pipit may appear on higher sections.

From Rata, the glacier runs down a steep valley between forested slopes and snow-covered peaks. A broad horizontal frame keeps the ice, mountain walls and dark foreground slopes together; the higher Christmas Lookout is the better choice if you want a more open panorama.
