Pros & cons
PROS
- First clear Franz Josef Glacier view on the Alex Knob Track
- Good turnaround if clouds build or time is short
CONS
- Views are less expansive than Christmas Lookout and the summit
- No amenities at the lookout itself
Overview
Rata Lookout is the first proper glacier viewpoint on the Alex Knob Track, about 4.5 km up-trail. It serves up that initial wow-factor glimpse of Franz Josef / Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere without committing to the full summit push. It’s a solid goal if you’re starting late or if cloud is building—higher lookouts are often better, but this one is the reliable early win.
What You’ll See
From a perch above lush rainforest, you’ll look across to the Franz Josef Glacier with the valley below—one of those rare places where ice meets temperate forest. Expect a good, direct glacier view here, though the panorama broadens significantly if you continue to Christmas Lookout and best of all at the summit.
Getting There
Start at the Alex Knob/Lake Wombat car park on the Franz Josef Glacier access road (about 2 km after crossing the Waiho Bridge from the township). The track climbs steadily from wide, easy footing to a steeper, rooty path through rimu–rātā–kāmahi forest. Count on roughly 2 hours to reach Rata Lookout; it’s another hour or so to Christmas Lookout, and the full return to the summit is signposted around 17–17.2 km/8 hours.
Trail Feel and Conditions
This is classic West Coast tramping: steep in places, slippery when wet, and no water sources en route. Weather swings quickly; afternoon cloud is common in summer, and winter conditions often turn wintry above Christmas Lookout. Many hikers sensibly make Rata their turnaround in clag or if energy is fading.
Wildlife
Listen for tūī and bellbird in the forest, with kererū flapping through the canopy. You might also encounter kākā or parakeets in the bush, and kea become more likely higher up the track.
Practicalities and Fees
There are no toilets or facilities at Rata Lookout. Use the main Franz Josef Glacier car park loos before you start. If the small Alex Knob/Lake Wombat car park is full, park at the main glacier car park and walk back along the signed path. DOC is piloting paid parking at Franz Josef Glacier from December 15, 2025 to June 30, 2026: $5/hour or $20/day (card only); the first 20 minutes are free.
Best Time to Visit
Go early for clearer views and gentler temps—morning light also sits nicely on the glacier. Weekdays see a touch less traffic on the lower track. In winter, consider making Rata your goal unless you’re equipped and experienced for alpine travel.
Is It Worth It?
Yes—especially if you want a shorter outing with strong glacier views. If skies are crystal and you’ve got gas in the tank, continue to Christmas Lookout for a markedly bigger vista; otherwise, Rata delivers a satisfying payoff for the effort.
