Overview

A short, family‑friendly wander through lush West Coast rainforest with a dose of glacier history. The Douglas Walk is an easy 3.9 km (2.4 miles) return track, typically taking about 1 hour total. Expect well‑formed tread, gentle grades, and a sampler of glacial landforms from advances and retreats between roughly 1600–1750 AD. It’s more about forest, landforms, and reflections than big glacier views.

Highlights

  • Peters Pool is a small kettle lake that can serve up glassy reflections on calm days.
  • The historic Douglas Bridge adds a bit of drama and a tangible link to early exploration.
  • Along the way you’ll pass sequences of regenerating forest that tell a clear story of how vegetation reclaims ground after ice retreats and soils evolve.

Route and Variations

Most walkers treat this as an out‑and‑back to the Douglas Bridge via Peters Pool. A loop option exists, but it finishes with a short walk along the Glacier Access Road—fine if you don’t mind roadside walking, otherwise turn around at the bridge. Expect roughly 90 m/300 ft of total ascent spread out over the outing.

Getting There

From Franz Josef/Waiau township, cross the Waiho River bridge and turn left onto Glacier Access Road (Te Ara a Waiau). Continue about 4 km to the car park at the end of the road; the track starts here.

Fees and Access Notes

Walking the track is free. A pilot parking fee at Franz Josef Glacier car parks is scheduled from mid‑December 2025 through June 30, 2026 (NZ$5/hour or NZ$20/day; first 20 minutes free; card‑only machines; annual permits available online). As of December 4, 2025, these fees are not yet in effect.

Is it worth it?

Yes—if you want an easy, educational stroll with kid‑friendly mileage, reflections at Peters Pool, and a classic suspension bridge. If you’re chasing big glacier vistas, manage expectations; views from this walk are limited. Consider pairing this with a higher‑viewpoint track on a clear day if that’s your priority.

Best Time to Hike

Go early or on a still day for the best Peters Pool reflections. This area sees frequent rain; the track can be wet and slick after showers, so pack a rain layer and grippy footwear.

Tips

  • If you dislike roadside walking, skip the loop and return the way you came.
  • No dogs are permitted on this walk.
  • Expect changeable weather; waterproofs and insect repellent are smart to have.

Pros

  • Mirror‑calm reflections at Peters Pool on still mornings
  • Clear sequence of glacial landforms and regenerating rainforest

Cons

  • Limited glacier views compared to other tracks
  • Loop variation includes a short roadside section

Parking

End of Glacier Access Road (Te Ara a Waiau) about 4 km from Franz Josef/Waiau; car park at road end. Pilot parking fees scheduled from mid‑December 2025 to June 30, 2026 (card only; first 20 minutes free).

Caution

Track can be wet and slippery after rain; frequent rainfall—carry waterproofs and insect repellent. No dogs. If you choose the loop, expect a short roadside walk.
