Guide
The West Coast Wildlife Centre is an indoor wildlife and conservation attraction at Cron and Cowan streets in Franz Josef/Waiau. Its main draw is a dim kiwi house, with little blue penguins, tuatara, glacier exhibits and local stories alongside it. Go if you want to see rowi up close and learn how they're protected. The animal collection is compact, so a short visit can feel expensive if you expect a large zoo.
Rowi and Haast tokoeka are nocturnal, and the kiwi house is kept dark. Pause and let your eyes adjust; visitors often need a moment to find the birds. Ask staff for help if you are struggling to spot them. There are also penguins and an encounter with tuatara, plus optional backstage tours for a closer look at the conservation work.
Rowi, or Ōkārito kiwi, are found only around nearby Ōkārito Forest. Haast tokoeka are native to the Haast Range. The centre is the official indoor home for incubating eggs and raising chicks of both species before they move to predator-free creches or release programmes. It works with DOC and Ngāti Māhaki, so the kiwi displays connect directly to conservation in this region.
The centre opened in November 2010 in the former Hukawai Glacier Centre building, keeping glacier interpretation alongside its new wildlife work. Wawe, the first rowi chick hatched here, arrived on 26 November 2010. The first Haast tokoeka chick followed on 2 October 2011; Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio named it Ōkahu.
The displays also explain the ice that shapes this coast. Fox Glacier is about 13 km long and descends roughly 2,600 m from its névé to the valley. Fox and Franz Josef glaciers flow about ten times faster than most valley glaciers, a striking detail to keep in mind when you see them outside.
A quick visit often takes around 30 to 60 minutes; reading the displays or taking a backstage tour adds time. The on-site café serves coffee and hot drinks, and the gift shop sells locally inspired souvenirs. Wi-Fi is available with a purchase.
