Hiking Te Ara a Waiau Walkway/Cycleway

The routeTe Ara a Waiau is an 8.

Te Ara a Waiau is an 8.7 km return shared walk and cycleway from Franz Josef village to the Franz Josef Glacier car park. Allow about two hours on foot; the walking grade is easy to intermediate. The route follows a sealed lane beside Glacier Access Road, leaves it for a short forest section near Rata Grove, crosses Glacier Valley Access Road, then climbs gently through rainforest. Return on the same track. The described access is outside the visitor centre at 69 Cron Street, but the map line begins about 1.1 km straight-line south near Waiho River bridge; the village-side approach is not shown, so use the official access directions rather than treating the mapped start as the trailhead. Check track conditions and the weather forecast before setting out.

Along Glacier Access RoadThe first roughly 1.

The first roughly 1.7 km uses a sealed lane marked for walkers and cyclists along the left edge of Glacier Access Road. Keep to the shared lane and out of the vehicle lanes. Near Rata Grove, gravel track enters the forest briefly, then returns to cross Glacier Valley Access Road. Give way to traffic at the crossing. The trail meets Lake Wombat Walk shortly after; watch for walkers and cyclists at the junction.

Forest and turnaroundBeyond the crossing, the trail climbs easily through lush rainforest.

Beyond the crossing, the trail climbs easily through lush rainforest. Birdlife is abundant, though no route-specific species list is documented. Mountain and upper-valley views appear intermittently rather than from a named lookout. The cycle route ends at the bike rack by the glacier car park: leave bikes there, because cycling does not continue onto other local tracks. Dogs are not allowed.
