“You're coming up on Picnic Bay, where the rock pools reward a slower look along the sand. The short path from the car park is steep, and its lookout gives you a view across the bay to the offshore islands.”

Picnic Bay is a 500 m sandy beach at Wilsons Promontory, with intertidal rockpools and a lookout toward offshore islands. It sits north of Leonard Point; Picnic Point separates it from neighboring Whisky Bay, so the two beaches are close but distinct stops. If you want a beach walk with tide pools, this is a good place to slow down and look along the coast. The 500 m of sand gives you room to wander; the nearby rock pools and points add things to notice beyond a straight swim-and-go stop.

The direct visit is simple but not completely level: a short, steep path drops from the carpark to the beach. There is a lookout on the way, with views of offshore islands, so give it a pause on both the walk down and the climb back. Once on the sand, look for intertidal pools and take time to beachcomb; this stop rewards a slower look along the water's edge, not just a quick step out for a swim. The pools are an intertidal feature, so what is exposed changes with the tide; if that is the reason you're coming, time your visit for when they are visible. The carpark has a toilet, and parking serves the beach. The steep track matters if you need a level approach or have trouble on slopes.

Add it to a longer coast walkPicnic Bay works as a short beach stop on its own, but it also sits on a longer coastal walk.

Picnic Bay works as a short beach stop on its own, but it also sits on a longer coastal walk. A route links Norman Beach, Tidal Overlook, Squeaky Beach, Picnic Bay and Whisky Bay over 6 km one way, taking about three hours and alternating between track and beach walking. That's a point-to-point outing, not a quick loop from Picnic Bay's carpark. If you want the simplest visit to this beach, use its carpark and short access track; if you want several different shorelines in one walk, allow time for the full four-beach route. The changing surface makes the longer outing feel different from a single beach visit.

Swimming and the viewSwimming here needs caution.

Swimming here needs caution. The beach is unpatrolled and rated highly hazardous, with rips among the identified risks; check conditions before swimming. If a supervised swim is your priority, this isn't the stop to choose; make the beach, rockpools and lookout the reason to come. If conditions don't suit a swim, beachcombing and the tide pools are still good reasons to come ashore. For a wider photo, stop at the lookout on the access track and include the offshore islands; from the sand, the breaking surf against the rocky point gives a closer view of the bay's shape.
