Best time to visit

WMC’s marquee Field Studies Program typically runs from late June to early August, with additional workshops and community events sprinkled through summer. Time your visit to overlap with a program—it adds real depth to a day of hiking or mill touring. Mornings are generally calm; late afternoons and early evenings tend to pick up when workshops and events gather. If you’re planning photos or a slower visit, slide in earlier in the day.

Facilities & Comfort Level

This is deliberately rustic. The Hardware Store campus has filtered cold water, wood‑stove heat, two outhouses, and an outdoor bucket‑style shower heated by a wood‑fired system. Power comes from solar with a generator backup, so device charging is limited and conservation is the norm. There’s no noted Wi‑Fi; plan for limited or none. Workshop participants can use primitive camping nearby; bear barrels are available.

Getting There (Important)The last 60 miles to McCarthy are on the unpaved McCarthy Road.

The last 60 miles to McCarthy are on the unpaved McCarthy Road. You’ll park at the Kennicott River, cross the pedestrian footbridge with your gear, and hop a shuttle to McCarthy/Kennecott. There’s no cell service on the road and no services between Chitina and the footbridge—fuel up ahead, drive slow, and know how to handle a flat. Shuttles run regularly between the footbridge, McCarthy, the airstrip, and Kennecott.
