Bonanza Mine Trail

Walk from Kennecott Mill Town on the signed Root Glacier Trail access. About a half mile beyond the visitor center, turn right at the signed Bonanza Mine split. The route climbs steeply on an old mining road through forest and then open alpine terrain, with broad views toward the Chugach Mountains, Mount Blackburn, and the Kennicott Glacier. A directional sign near the lower climb separates the Bonanza and Jumbo mine routes; stay on the Bonanza route.

The road continues for roughly 3.5 miles beyond the lower junction to the breakover tram tower, from which the Bonanza Mine buildings are visible. Follow the steep, loose path from the tower toward the mine buildings. The route is rugged and exposed in places, and the upper section requires careful footing.

Reach Kennecott via the McCarthy Road, cross the Kennicott River footbridge, and use the local shuttle or bike service for the road to Kennecott Mill Town. Begin at the Mill Town access and follow signs for the Root Glacier Trail and Bonanza Mine. Carry plenty of water, trekking poles for the steep descent, insect repellent for the forest, sun protection, and bear spray. Check with the National Park Service for current access and conditions before setting out.

The mine buildings are unstable and the mine entrance is restricted; do not enter structures or tunnels, and leave historic artifacts in place. The Park Service warns that abandoned explosives may remain: do not touch suspicious objects and report them to a ranger. The route includes steep grades and loose rock, especially near the mine, and passes through bear country. Stay on the signed route through private-property areas and leave ATVs at the Kennicott River; ATV access along the route is limited to private-property owners and their guests.
